Often you hear these words tossed around the gym, “I’m shredding at the moment” or “I’ve started bulking”....? Let’s take a quick peak into these two body building terms and understand what people mean when they are shredding vs when they are bulking.

In body building there are two key phases, shredding and bulking. Shredding being aimed at cutting body fat and bulking being aimed at building muscle. The idea is that to lose fat and shred, you need to consume fewer calories than you burn off. Whereas to build muscle and bulk, you need to consume more (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.puregym.com/amp/blog/bulking-and-shredding-what-is-it-and-is-it-for-me/).

As the main goal of a shred phase is to lose weight by burning body fat whilst maintaining muscle mass, all of the workouts being done should be focused on burring calories rather than building any muscle. This phase is key for developing definition and defining the muscles, hence why we want to shred fat.  We need to look at the shredding phase being based on creating a calorie deficit to enable your body to burn fat for fuel (https://tayefehfitness.com/2019/01/06/bulk-vs-shred/) For the ultimate in fat burning supplements, check out:

When we are bulking and looking to increase muscle mass, a high proportion of your extra calories should come from foods containing protein. This will give you the necessary calories and amino acids to build muscle mass ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/articles/bulking_and_cutting). This phase of body building is key as it is where the bulk of muscles are gained and most of the heavy gym workouts are done.

But without protein it is possible you could just build fat and little muscle, here’s two of our heavy hitter proteins supplements that promote muscle mass:

So, whether you're in a shredding phase, bulking phase or tackling a combination, don’t forget how key supplements are to your progress, fit journey and achieve your goals!
